The Sheila A. Jackson Foundation was founded in loving memory of my late mother whom we lost in 2015 to heart failure. In the process of weighing her treatment options, the possibility of a heart transplant was raised and I recall myself and other close family immediately discounting the idea. Looking back, I think that was largely rooted in fear and lack of knowledge, and I always wonder if transplantation could have saved her life. For this reason, and in hopes that I could help prevent other families from experiencing this same pain and uncertainty, my foundation was born. We aim to raise awareness about heart health and minority organ donation, as White, non-Hispanic patients are more than twice as likely to receive an organ transplant as minorities. All proceeds and donations go toward free community events and other organizations that champion these causes.
